Updated: Jun 11, 2021
5 June 2021

We cannot turn back time. But we can plant trees, green our cities, transform our gardens, change our diets, and clean up rivers and coasts. We are the generation that can make peace with nature. World Environment Day is celebrated annually on June 5 and is also a platform to encourage people to take care of their environment and create awareness to protect it. It was established in 1972 by the United Nations at the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. This year, on June 5, the theme for World Environment Day 2021 is ECOSYSTEM RESTORATION.

Ecosystem restoration involves helping to restore ecosystems that have been degraded or destroyed. It also involves preserving ecosystems that are fragile or still intact. Ecosystem can be restored in many ways. Planting trees is one of the earliest and best ways to take care of the environment. People also need to remove pressure on the environment.
Restoration can be done in many ways, by actively planting or by removing pressure so that nature can recover on its own. It is not always possible or desirable to restore an ecosystem to its original state. We will need farmland and infrastructure on land that was once forest. So an ecosystem, like society, must adapt to a changing climate. Every year, World Environment Day is hosted by different countries.

In which the official celebrations are held and this year is hosted by Pakistan. The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed the UN decade at Ecosystem Restoration after over 70 countries from all latitudes made a proposal and resolution for action. It is a call to protect and revitalize ecosystems around the world for the benefit of people and nature. It aims to stop the destruction of ecosystems and restore them to achieve global goals. Only with a healthy ecosystem, we can improve people's livelihoods, counter climate change and halt the collapse of biodiversity.

At Laxmi Vidyapeeth, the ecosystem is nurtured with dedicated care for each and every tree. In this 120 acre lush green campus, tree plantation is done as a part of every organized event and horticulture is maintained by a well qualified team. Especially the role of NSS and Nirman students group are remarkable in tree plantation activities.

Continuing the work of tree planting, new saplings are prepared by our gardeners on the occasion of environment day and 200+ saplings are planted in and around the campus. As part of celebration, let's make a resolution to save nature in all possible ways.
